How To Get Rid of Dry Scalp

If you've ever dealt with an itchy, flaky scalp, you know how challenging it can be to find relief. Whether your dome is itching, or the dandruff is already falling, understanding the root causes is the first step in choosing the right treatments. It’s a delicate dance, so that’s why we’re here to help.

What causes dry scalp?

Dry scalp can be caused by several factors (how fun!), ranging from environmental conditions to the products you use. Common suspects include:

  • Weather changes: Cold, dry air in winter can strip moisture from your scalp, while the summer sun can dry it out. Similarly, AC and indoor heating systems can lower humidity levels indoors, compounding the problem.
  • Harsh hair products: Many shampoos contain sulfates and other drying ingredients that strip natural oils from the scalp. Swap out yours with our 2-1 Shampoo + Conditioner that hydrates your head and is rich in antioxidants.
  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough water can lead to overall dryness, including in the skin and scalp. Chug-a-lug, chums.
  • Underlying skin conditions: Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis can cause chronic dryness, itching, and flakiness. Pro-tip: talk to a dermatologist for extra help.

Symptoms of dry scalp.

Get ahead of the flakes. Watch out for these symptoms:

  • Flakiness: Small, white flakes that are especially noticeable on dark clothing.
  • Itching: Persistent itching is a classic sign of dryness.
  • Tightness: The scalp may feel tight and uncomfortable.
  • Redness: You may notice mild redness, indicating irritation.

Dry scalp vs. dandruff: What’s the diff?

Remember, there is a diff.

A dry scalp results from a lack of moisture, leading to small, white flakes. Dandruff, however, is caused by an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus and results in larger, oily flakes that tend to stick to hair and scalp. Not sure? Talk to your dermatologist.

How to treat your dry scalp:

  • Hydrating shampoos and conditioners: Look for products labeled “moisturizing” or “nourishing,” and avoid sulfates, which can strip moisture from your scalp.
  • Scalp oils and serums: Tea tree oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil have moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties that soothe dryness and irritation. Simply massage a few drops onto your scalp, allowing the product to absorb before washing or leave it overnight for intense hydration.
  • Pro tip for our bald kings: Our Dome Soother is infused with aloe, gotu kola, and colloidal oats for all-day hydration.
  • Go au natural with some of these home remedies:
  • Coconut oil: Apply warm coconut oil directly to the scalp, leave it for 20–30 minutes, then rinse.
  • Aloe vera gel: Aloe is incredibly soothing and hydrating. Massage it onto the scalp, let it sit for about 15 minutes, then rinse.
  • Apple cider vinegar rinse: Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, apply to your scalp after shampooing, and rinse out after a few minutes. It can help balance the scalp’s pH and reduce dryness.
  • Regular scalp scrubbing: Exfoliating your scalp can help remove dead skin cells and allow treatments to penetrate more deeply. Try the Scalp Buffer once a week to promote healthy circulation and remove any buildup.

Preventative measures for dry scalp:

  • Don’t wash your hair daily—it can strip away natural oils. Aim for at least every other day.
  • Limit the use of heat styling tools. TLDR: Air-drying is your friend.
  • Drink plenty of water and prioritize foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, flaxseed, and walnuts) to help nourish your scalp from the inside out.
  • Protect your scalp from the elements. In colder months, wearing a hat or scarf shields your scalp from the drying effects of wind and low humidity. In warmer months, opt for a leave-in conditioner with SPF or use sunscreen specifically formulated for the scalp.

Conclusion: Hydration is key.

To maintain a healthy scalp, you have to keep it hydrated. By avoiding harsh products, taking the preventative measures we outlined above, and experimenting with the Scalp Buffer, 2-1 Shampoo + Conditioner, and Dome Soother you can keep your scalp comfortable. Figure out what works best for you and let us know on social your favorite scalp product.
