Why is Maintaining pH Balance so Important?
It's time for a little science lesson from your friends at Manscaped. pH balance is a very important part of being healthy and staying healthy. In this case we're talking about pH for skin, since our trade is the skin trade (well, not THAT skin trade - get your mind out of the gutter).
What is pH? pH is short for the power of hydrogen. It is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of our body’s fluids and tissues (including skin), and is measured on a scale from 0 to 14. The more acidic a solution is, the lower its pH. The more alkaline, the higher the number is. A pH of 7 is perfectly neutral. The skin’s barrier, known as the acid mantle, needs to be 5.5 on the pH scale to be considered optimal. When skin's pH is optimal, it looks healthy, hydrated, and youthful. This barrier is very important for keeping lipids and moisture in the skin while also blocking out the bad stuff, like pollution and bacteria. When the skin is too alkaline, it becomes dry, sensitive and inflamed. Too acidic, and acne and breakouts occur. Neither one is good.
pH balance can be affected by diet, sun exposure, exposure to toxins, pollution, and bacteria. We are human, after all, and sometimes we don’t treat our bodies well. We do fun things like eat rich food, drink too much, and lay out in the sun, so maintaining optimal pH balance can be difficult. How you cleanse and care for your skin can really help put your skin back into balance, despite all the difficulties we put our skin through.
A good body wash or cleanser, like the Crop Cleanser, will wash away the bacteria and grime that can throw your pH balance off, while still maintaining the moisture and lipids necessary for healthy skin. The Crop Cleanser is gentle and doesn’t strip the skin like many harsh soaps that are too alkaline can. Maintaining PH balance is particularly important below-the-belt because bacteria can easily fester down in and around your family jewels. Doing a little more than cleansing will really help the health and appearance of your skin. Because no one wants irritated skin "down there."
Like we have discussed before, skin that's dry is too alkaline, which can lead to inflammation and premature aging. Just keeping your skin clean is not enough to maintain your pH balance. You need to also moisturize your skin properly. Enter the Crop Preserver. This bad-boy moisturizer/deodorant will create a barrier between your skin and all the bad stuff out there, protecting it. Almost like a bouncer at a club. It also helps maintain pH balance by providing moisture so it won’t become too alkaline. But wait...there’s more, the Crop Preserver is also a deodorant, keeping your skin at the appropriate level of dryness, which helps prevent moisture-induced bacteria. Additionally, sweat is acidic, and deodorants that don’t regulate pH can cause irritation. When your skin pH is not balanced and you sweat, the your body odor is even stronger.
That leads us to the finishing touch, the Crop Reviver, a refreshing and toning spray that maintains skin pH throughout the day. As you go about your day, whether you are highly active or not, you body will still produce sweat, and because sweat is so alkaline, it can throw off your pH balance. The Crop Reviver is perfectly hydrating and pH balancing so your sweat doesn’t transform into horrible body odor.
Luckily, maintaining your pH is not nearly as difficult as maintaining your love life. Eating right and using the right products will put you on the track for healthy skin and a healthy body. Now that's being a refined gentleman.
