Waxing Ass Hair vs Shaving Your Butt Hair

Manscaping looks and feels great! It’s actually kind of fun and satisfying -- right up to the part where you have to deal with the hair on your ass. Maybe they’re right and all of that bourbon has put you in a predicament. No matter. The word is out and ass hair has to go. The question is: how? In the big picture, there are a lot of options. Laser removal (only works on very light hair so good luck), creams (just don’t get too close to the hole!) and other niche methods are all available, but shaving and waxing are certainly the most popular. Since this is something you’re going to have to do throughout your adult life, you need to know sooner than later which is really better. Waxing ass hair vs shaving your butt hair? Hmmm. We have you covered.

Waxing

There’s a lot of stigma around waxing. And, considering we make razor blades and not wax appointments, you might think that we heavily favor the former. The truth is that different solutions are right for different people. That might not be the fun answer, but that’s how it is. So, for half of this discussion, we’re going to try and erase some of your misconceptions around waxing. Then, we’ll honestly hit you with the cons so you can make an informed decision.

It Hurts

Ok. Ripping the hair out of your ass certainly doesn’t feel delightful. There is a cost here, and that cost is toughness. If you really want to see how high a pitch you can scream, a bad wax job can probably get you there. Except, this is also a profession. People have learned a lot about waxing, and there a lot of ways to mitigate pain. Some of them will be handled by the clinic or person doing the job, but a lot of them are up to you. The little known secret is that a lot of tips that help reduce shaving irritation can also mitigate waxing pain.

It all comes back to skin and hair care. If you shower daily with Crop Cleanser, you’re going to have healthy, hydrated skin and softened hair follicles. These factors will actually make waxing an easier ordeal and improve the resilience and pain tolerance in your skin. They don’t make waxing completely painless, but they do make a world of difference.

Also, trimmed hair pulls more freely. This is an oversimplification of the real science, but the point is that having trimmed ass hair can make a waxing appointment go a lot better. That said, trimming your ass will lead you to many of the same obstacles as shaving.

It’s Expensive

We can’t fully debunk this because waxing is more costly than shaving. Still, there are a lot of ways to manage the cost. First, you don’t need to wax every week. The perfect schedule will depend on how quickly your ass grows its tuft, but for most guys once every month or even every few months is sufficient. Compared to the cost of replacement blades for your razor, it’s not so bad. More expensive, but not inordinately so.

It’s Awkward

A lady might make an appointment to have her legs or eyebrows waxed. Sure, other body parts come up, but those are both innocuous appointments that can enable client and waxer to break the ice before getting down and dirty. For guys, there’s a lot less opportunity. At best, you might go in for a back appointment before showing a stranger your bare ass. Then again, we’re optimists over here. An awkward waxing appointment is a chance to shake things up a bit. If you learn to own that awkwardness, it’ll help you later in life. Probably.

Ok, we’ll come clean. The real answer to this one is to just man up and do what you need to do.

Shaving

We don’t feel the need to get too deep into shaving the buttocks. You already know your way around a razor. You also understand the cons of being able to take care of things yourself and saving a little money in the process. It’s why you learned to change the oil on your car. You still pay someone else to do it whenever you’re feeling lazy, but at least it’s a choice. Right? So, we’ll briefly go over the keys to shaving, and then we’ll tally the score.

Cutting the Hair

As we’ve mentioned, you probably know the basics for trimming and shaving. We’ll remind you to always trim first. And, both should be done before you shower. It’s better for hygiene and reducing irritation after the shave. Here’s the recap: Lawn Mower before Plow. Both should be done with the Magic Mat.

Skin Care and Hygiene

We mentioned Crop Cleanser already. Suffice it to say that when you shower with it, you need to exfoliate. This is part of that process we discussed that reduces pain and irritation, no matter which method you choose to keep your ass clean. There are two more things that can contribute to your hygiene regimen. After a shower, use ball deodorant. We don’t have time to tell you everything wonderful about Crop Preserver right now, but suffice it to say that the stuff will change your life. In concert with the deodorant, you want a few spritzes of Crop Reviver. It’s the formula that is specifically designed to help your skin recover from a shave. Like aftershave, but without setting your balls on fire.

Which Is Better

We promised you a fair comparison, so here it is. If you actually have the means to shave your own ass, it’s obviously better than waxing. If not, waxing is the practical solution. But, we also promised you some cons, so let's compare.

Discomfort

Unless you’ve had your ass shaved, you don’t realize this yet. When the hair grows back to stubble level, especially between the cheeks, it chafes and itches like a mother. Your hygiene routine helps a lot, but it’s a discomfort that catches a lot of guys off guard.

Conversely, when you wax, again especially between the cheeks, you’re going to be sore. On a small scale, skin comes up with the hair. It’s always the worst the first time, but you’re going to walk gingerly and sit a little sideways. It’s not so much that you’ll be in overwhelming agony, but it’s a consistent discomfort. Also, you can safely assume you won’t want to do vigorous workouts or wear anything tight. We highly recommend wearing boxers the day of a wax job.

While you can find discomfort with either method, they both beat missing out on a fun night because you have a yeti growing out of your butt. For this category, we give the slight edge to shaving. Prickly hair isn’t quite as bad as rug burn on your ass.

Practicality

You’ve already contemplated how to shave your ass without cutting it to pieces. It’s not easy, and for plenty of guys, it’s plain impossible. That leaves you with two options: ask for help or pay a professional (to wax). There’s actually a third option. You can do your own wax job. It’s still tricky, but at least the risk of self-mutilation goes away. Before you go that route we want to warn you. DIY wax kits are not the gentlest things on the planet. It would be fine on tougher parts of your body, but that ass-crack hair is a different beast. We prefer the first two options.

There’s not a lot to compare here. If you have the means to shave, it’s more convenient and practical. If not, the winner is obviously waxing.

Extra Factors

The last category is going to combine a few things. First, we have to consider investment. This isn’t just money. It’s also time and effort. Shaving takes more effort, but waxing costs more in both time and money (assuming you have to go somewhere to get waxed). There’s also the issue of repetition. While you do need to shave more often than wax, it’s proportional. A guy who grows a little more slowly will only need to shave about once a month and get waxed a few times a year. Other guys need more frequent care. Hey, stop judging! Hairiness used to be a sign of masculinity!

Ahem. Anyways, if you need to get waxed every month, you’ll probably need to shave two to three times a month. We can’t gauge those convenience factors for you, so you can judge which method wins this category.

The Final Score

On paper, we’re fans of shaving. We’re good at it, and we understand it better. But, in practice waxing is much easier, safer and more reliable. The conclusion was inevitable from the beginning. If you’re a normal human being who can’t feasibly shave his own ass, go get it waxed.

But, that doesn’t get you off the hook for the rest of your manscaping. The ass is important, but it’s not number one. You can't forget your balls.
